Swap, Sort, Sweater Weather: The Closet Reset You Know You Need

Swap, sort, and reset your closet this autumn: let go of what no longer fits and add burgundy, checks, and cozy knits for a fresh, effortless season.

When the landlord announced he would stop by to check whether the heating in our brand-new apartment works, I knew autumn had finally arrived. It also means it’s closet cleansing day.

Twice a year, in spring and in fall, I reorganize my closet. Partly because I simply like things to be orderly, and partly because I’d run out of space if my summer and winter wardrobes both claimed the front row at once. And yes, my closet really is always this tidy.

Living in Colombo, I learned there are only two seasons (“hot and hotter”, a little island joke), and in the Middle East, I learned that the seasons don’t always follow the calendar. One year I switched too early and was caught off guard by a sudden change in the weather. So now I wait for the moment autumn truly arrives, then make the switch with intention: light linen and sandals go to the back (resp. on the “Cyprus-vacation pile”, where I will be next week), while knits, boots, and layers move to the front.

What I love most is that this ritual is never only about the closet. Sometimes it’s your mind that’s too full. Clothes that no longer fit often remind us of old roles, past phases of life, or insecurities we overcame long ago, and letting them go feels surprisingly liberating. Outer order creates inner peace, you make room for the new, and you start to understand what you truly need and love. Mornings get easier too, because grabbing the right outfit quickly puts you in a good mood before the day has even started. And if you buy fewer but better pieces afterwards, you’ll enjoy them longer, and the environment will thank you.

Feng Shui adds another layer to this. It teaches that objects store energy, and that clutter blocks the flow of qi, our life energy. A successful Feng Shui consultant once told me that a cluttered basement isn’t good for relationships. Since then, not only has my closet been tidied up, but my basement looks wonderfully orderly too, though I have to give credit where it’s due (the husband). The same goes for emotions. Things hold on to them, clothes especially, and sometimes those emotions are negative. After one of my odysseys of a return trip to Jerusalem, I had to part with a whole outfit for exactly that reason. Some clothes simply belong to a chapter you don’t want to carry into the next one.

Which brings me to the question I like to ask myself while sorting: who am I today, and what does my wardrobe say about me? If you’ve been promoted but your clothes don’t reflect your new role, it’s time to elevate your style. If your corporate days are behind you and your life looks completely different now, it may be time to say goodbye to that dark blazer. And it honestly hurts my heart when someone tells me they don’t need anything new anymore because they “just walk the dog now anyway.” A new phase of life, whether you’re becoming an empty nester or starting a new career, deserves a style that supports your new path.

Autumn is the perfect time for all of this. Spring isn’t the only season for fresh starts. In nature, leaves fall, trees let go of what they no longer need, and everything turns inward to rest and gather strength. We can borrow that rhythm. If you declutter now, you create space for calm, warmth, and coziness to move into your home and your closet. Think of it as an autumn cleaning for the soul, with a big impact.

Once the closet is cleared, there’s room for a few new pieces, and the trick is choosing ones that all work together.

If you do it like me, start with a burgundy leather clutch, because you can never have enough bags. Pair it with checkered wide-leg pants in a wool blend for instance, which drape beautifully and are the one statement piece of the outfit. Add a brown sweater in chunky merino or soft cashmere, or a ribbed turtleneck if you like. Finish with a long wool coat, ankle boots in leather or suede, and a fine scarf with a hint of burgundy.

Mix your textures (leather, wool, suede, cashmere), keep to one pattern per outfit, and everything will go with everything. Getting dressed on a cold morning then takes about two minutes.
